Although pools are fun, relaxing, and refreshing, they can also be somewhat dangerous. Without taking the proper precautions, injury or worse becomes a genuine possibility.

Safety products are a must to keep a pool accident-free and safe. This article discusses pool safety equipment that provides much-needed peace of mind.

Wall or fence pool alarms

This type of pool safety product is mounted on the wall or fence surrounding the pool. It detects movement via infrared beams. If an intruder breaks the device, it can also set the alarm off using magnetic connections.

Fence pool alarms aren't under direct water exposure, so they are cheaper than similar devices built for pool edges. The downside is that the kids can trigger them by just passing by.

Pool infrared alarms

This pool alarm type uses the same principle as the fence alarms mentioned above. They are more expensive but are located on the inside wall of a pool. Pool infrared alarms go off when someone or something falls into the water.

Usually, pool infrared alarms ignore everything lighter than 15lbs.

These alarms should pick up on any movement resembling falling into a pool. However, given that they hang on the pool's side, they don't pick up underwater motion.

Underwater alarms

This alarm type exclusively picks up on underwater activity by using a sonar system. Underwater alarms are great because they detect any water movement. If a child falls into a pool, the alarm goes off immediately. However, the only way to turn them off is to physically take the device out of the water and manually switch it to "sleep."

Floating sensors

Floating sensors are as simple as pool alarms systems get. They float on the pool's surface and go off the moment the water is disturbed. Although floating sensors are remarkably efficient, they go off in heavy rain and when an object disturbs the surface. Strong winds also trigger them.

Pool cover

Pool safety is not only about motion detection. Preventing the kids or anyone else from falling into a pool while it's not in use is vital. A cover that can support an adult person's weight is a must. To be sure, don't get a cover that isn't certified by the American Society for Testing and Materials. ASTM-certified pool covers should hold up to 4,000lbs in weight.

Make sure to have an expert install the cover for maximum safety.

Life vests

Having the children and other non-swimmers wear life vests is the safest way to go, at least until they've learned how to swim correctly. It may sound like overkill, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Keeping the pool safe

Taking all the proper precautions is essential for any family, especially if any children are running around the pool. Pool safety is a serious matter.
